See and Be Seen
Visibility matters: enhancing road safety through visibility and awareness
To be seen on an e-bike, use bright and reflective clothing, a helmet, and a reliable lighting system (front and rear, day and night) with flash and steady modes. To see your surroundings, ensure your headlight is bright and properly aimed, and reduce your speed in low-visibility or crowded areas. Always ride defensively and make eye contact with drivers to confirm they see you.
Be Seen
Lighting: Equip your e-bike with both a bright front light and a rear light, and use them at all times, including during the day.
Use a "Day-Flash" mode during the day to grab attention.
Use "Steady" mode at dusk and dawn.
Keep lenses clean and mounts secure.
Reflectors: E-Bikes come from the manufacturer with the required safety reflectors
Red rear reflector.
White or yellow reflector on each pedal, shoe, or ankle.
White or yellow reflector on each side forward of the center of the bicycle and to the rear of the center of the bicycle unless the bicycle is equipped with reflectorized tires on the front and rear.
Clothing and gear: Wear bright, fluorescent colors like neon yellow or orange to stand out.
Add reflective elements to your clothing, shoes, gloves, and helmet.
Reflective tape can be added to existing clothing or gear.
Predictable riding:
Ride assertively and predictably. Take the lane when necessary to avoid the "dooring" zone of parked cars and to stay out of drivers' blind spots.
Install turning signals if you do not have any, and use hand signals
Announce your presence: Use a bell or horn to alert pedestrians of your approach in areas with heavy foot traffic.
Make eye contact: Always try to make eye contact with drivers and pedestrians to ensure they are aware of you.
Night Riding
Bicycle lighting equipment is required by law when operating a bicycle during darkness to assist with remaining visible to motorists and other vulnerable roadway users
Add extra reflectors to your frame, wheels, pedals, your body, and even your helmet for increased visibility.
It is important to adjust your speed while riding at night as street hazards and obstructions can be harder to see.
Be extra cautious at intersections and when making left turns.
It is recommended to have front and rear lights on the E-Bike when riding at night.
When riding at night, wear bright colors and reflective gear to be seen by vehicles, other bicyclists and pedestrians.
Seeing
Mirrors: consider installing after market mirrors if your e-bike is not equipped
Aim your headlight: Set your headlight beam so it's just below the horizon, to light up the road ahead without blinding oncoming traffic.
Maintain a safe distance: Give yourself ample space to react to unexpected situations, increasing your buffer zone as your speed increases.
Slow down in visibility and crowded areas: Reduce your speed on shared paths or in busy areas to give yourself more time to see and react to pedestrians or other cyclists.
